I have done safari before in Tanzania, and debated whether to go to a larger park like Kruger, but decided to try a smaller private game reserve to avoid crowds and have a different experience. I came across Rhino Sands by accident, read reviews of their sister lodge Rhino River Lodge , and took a risk by booking at this new-ish lodge. I am so happy that I did. Rhino Sands offers an intimate, well-designed safari experience that's a perfect blend of relaxing, educational, and fun.
The luxury comes with its exclusivity maximum 8 guests at a time , its tastefully outfitted tents with gorgeous South African textiles, private decks, and individual plunge pools , and its riverine forest setting in the reserve, where we regularly spotted animals around the camp -- nyala, baboons, warthogs with their adorable piglet babies and I can't tell you how many birds. Btw, I didn't once feel unsafe walking around at night with my flashlight, but there is always someone to escort you back to your tent if you are uncomfortable in any way.
The staff was wonderful and kind. Thanks to Jared for making us feel so welcome. Two game drives a day one early in the morning and one late in the afternoon means you have lots of opportunities to see a diverse group I booked this trip for myself and two other friends as the final leg of a two-week trip to South Africa. Two game drives a day one early in the morning and one late in the afternoon means you have lots of opportunities to see a diverse group of animals -- including, yes, the Big Five if that's important to you -- but also lots of smaller moments that are just as special.
It's truly remarkable to see these stunning animals in their natural habitat, with no one else around, and you feel lucky for the experience -- especially when you spot endangered species like cheetahs and black rhinos. I also loved being there in November, when there were tons of newborns running around with their moms. Vicky, the guide, is extremely knowledgable and kept us entertained and informed about every single bird, plant and animal we encountered.
Thanks to her, I can now identify and explain in great detail all the differences between black rhino, white rhino, and elephant dung. Thanks Vicky! You will eat and drink often, and very well. You get a choice of meal options each day, and thanks to Mike the chef, everything we ate was truly delicious and also beautifully presented.
